... tien-yi's other lives ... ........ music ........ art ........ dance ........ writing ........ etc. ........ 1. Melaza Dance Company (1.02-12.03) I discovered salsa dancing in March, 2001, during a two month trip to Costa Rica. With the hiatus from the drums, I was craving a new artistic and rhythmic outlet, and everyone, young and old, danced down there - I thought it was the greatest thing in the world. I took a week of lessons from a short Costa Rican guy with great hips, and was out at the clubs every weekend. When I returned to Boston, I was determined to continue dancing, and was pleasantly surprised to discover a thriving salsa scene - Sophia's, Ryles, Johnny D's... In September, 2001 I started taking classes with April Genovese, who teaches New York style, "on 2". She is one of the most amazing dancers I've ever seen, elegant and sexy as all hell, and a super cool person to boot. In January 2002 I joined her newly formed dance company, Melaza. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to perform with Melaza in Boston, New York, Los Angeles and Puerto Rico. We got to go to salsa congresses - events where salsa maniacs from around the world get together for a week or weekend of workshops, performances and dance parties. It was always a humbling experience to see top-notch dancers and amazing choreography. I am forever grateful to have had the opportunity to share the stage (as well as the dance floor!) with some of these dancers. | ||
